May 17 is Armed Forces Day, a day on which our nation pays tribute to them, and the people of Foxboro have an opportunity to reach out to them on their day with a note of thanks, a few written words of appreciation, and to send them a small gift that would certainly bring a smile to their faces and comfort in their hearts knowing that we care and have been thinking about them.
On behalf of Hero Helpers of America (founded by Foxboro’s own Lauren Eliopoulos) and the Heartillery Group, both nationally known for their efforts to bring comfort to our servicemen and women, the organizers of Clean Up Foxboro Day are asking for donations for the troops. The specific request is for shampoo, protein bars, mixed nuts and dried fruit which will be boxed, together with notes of appreciation, and sent to the members of our Armed Forces.
There will be a special table set aside in the sign-up area of the Clean Up Foxboro Day and members of the Lawrence W. Foster Post American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2626 will be there to assist representatives of Hero’s Helpers and the Artillery Group in receiving donations for the servicemen and women.
We can also use this day to extend our outreach to those among us who depend upon the local Food Pantry and to help the volunteers who work the entire year through, including the Community Garden, as they reach out to families in need. There will be a donation area for non-perishable food set aside for the Foxborough Discretionary Fund as well, yet another way for our community to demonstrate its willingness to help save the environment while reaching out to others on May 17.
